Timeline

Timeline [1940s - Present]
s

Tom Riddle opens the Chamber of Secrets and releases the Basilisk, only to be falsely awarded a medal for "catching" Hagrid, the purported culprit. Tom kills his father and grandparents that summer, before stealing Marvolo's ring and framing his uncle Morfin for the murders. That September, he meets with Professor Slughorn and inquires about Horcruxes. This leads to the creation of the first horcrux: the diary, which he leaves behind in the hopes that the Chamber will be opened again.

Though in actuality a criminal, Tom Riddle is viewed as a model student and named Head Boy. Behind the scenes, he dabbles in the Dark Arts and begins to refer to himself as "Lord Voldemort" to his close friends, among them Avery Sr., Mulciber Sr., Rodolphus Lestrange, Nott, and Rosier. It is they who will one day help form the Knights of Walpurgis and comprise the first generation of the Death Eaters.

An eighteen year-old Tom Riddle graduates from Hogwarts and immediately applies for a teaching job at Hogwarts. Denied on the basis of his youth, he opts to work at Borgin and Burkes, a notorious Knockturn Alley shop dealing in dark relics and dangerous magical objects. In his spare time, he hosts gatherings for his closest friends to discuss the decline of pureblood ideology and the intrusive influence of Muggles. While Tom sinks deeper in the Dark Arts and his purist beliefs, his mentor, Albus Dumbledore, defeats the dark wizard Grindewald, winning the adulation of the Wizarding World.

In the interest of retrieving his mother's ancestral locket, Tom Riddle murders a rich old witch named Hepzibah Smith and frames her house elf for the crime. Among her priceless relics is Helga Hufflepuff's cup, which, like the Slytherin locket, is a perfect candidate for a Horcrux. Shortly thereafter, he vanishes from the public eye.

For the next ten years, Lord Voldemort focuses only on his descent into darkness and the construction of his army. With the aid of his loyal Knights, he travels the world, mastering the secrets of the Dark Arts, surreptitiously recruiting individuals with great promise, and making important contacts to aid him in the formation of his empire. Wizarding Britain is largely peaceful during this time, but Lord Voldemort's power and international influence increases exponentially.

s

At Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore is appointed to the position of Headmaster and hires Minerva McGonagall to teach Transfiguration in his absence.

After nearly ten years of silence, Voldemort resurfaces in late 1957. His followers, now privately referred to as Death Eaters, are a mix of his former classmates and younger wizards who show the potential to be useful in achieving his goals. Hearing word of Voldemort's return, Albus Dumbledore lays the foundation for an information network to track his activities.

For the second time, Voldemort requests the Defence Against the Dark Arts teaching position at Hogwarts. This time, the Headmaster is a wary Albus Dumbledore. Voldemort affects innocence in his desire to become a teacher, but his charade of good intent comes to an end when Albus not only names a few of his followers, but cites their present location and refers to them as "Death Eaters." Sensing the Dark Lord's intent to use Hogwarts as a breeding ground for his army, he denies his application. In retaliation, Voldemort curses the position.

Denied his desired influence at Hogwarts, Voldemort shifts his focus to building the foundation for his empire. Mindful of the importance of political influence and diplomacy, he instructs his followers to surreptitiously infiltrate the Ministry of Magic and persuade key purist families to raise money on his behalf. He also establishes a mentorship program within his inner circle to train new recruits.

s

Among others, Lily Evans, Severus Snape, and the Marauders are born.

Peaceful farmer Nobby Leach is named Minister of Magic after his credentialed predecessor's extramarital affair forces him to resign. Voldemort capitalizes on the man's idealism and susceptibility to influence by integrating him into renewed efforts to control the Ministry from the inside.

Resigning to spend more time with his ailing sheep, Nobby unwittingly throws a wrench in Voldemort's strategy. The inflexibility of former MLE head Ebenezer Trimble forces the Dark Lord and his followers to regroup and shift their efforts from political dominance to terrorism. Rufus Scrimgeour is promoted to the head of the Auror Office when Barty Crouch Sr., is chosen to take over the MLE.

s

A violent explosion in Belfast marks the first Death Eater attack, killing 54. Wizarding authorities initially dismiss it as an act of Muggle terrorism unrelated to Lord Voldemort.

Wizarding authorities find it far more difficult to blame Muggle terrorism when a Ministry employee disappears in conjunction with two more attacks. The Ministry continues to publicly deny a connection between the recent explosions, but The Daily Prophet is not nearly so cautious and reports on the growing trend of Wizarding terrorism. Covert members of the Order of the Phoenix planted within the Ministry report back to Dumbledore that Lord Voldemort may be to blame for the wave of violence.

Despite the disappearance of important officials and the Minister of Magic's wife, the Ministry remains adamant that these occurrences are isolated incidents with plausible explanations. When asked by The Daily Prophet to elaborate on these 'plausible explanations,' a Ministry spokesperson declines to comment.

A recent slew of attacks targets prominent Muggle locations, bolstering the Ministry's position that Muggle terrorism is to blame - until Rita Skeeter reports on the mysterious green mark looming ominously above the destruction. The Death Eaters thereafter claim responsibility for the violence in an exclusive article in The Daily Prophet. Barty Crouch Sr. is ordered to quell the terrorist uprising, but the Ministry's unwillingness to risk panic limits his ability to counter the attacks.

Death Eaters within the Ministry leak information about the whereabouts of the Senior Undersecretary, leading to a hostage crisis that serves primarily as a warning of what is to come if the Wizarding World does not accede to their demands. The Ministry continues to fail to address the threat publicly, but unofficially supports the Order's efforts to actively fight the Death Eaters. An auror capture of a dark wizard leads to the discovery that the Death Eaters are using the Imperius Curse, prompting Rufus Scrimgeour to devise secret codewords to limit infiltration via mind control.

Under Voldemort's orders, a group of giants launch lay siege to the district of Soho. The assault comes perilously close to Diagon Alley and forces the Ministry to obliviate vast numbers of Muggles whose homes and businesses have been destroyed. Subsequent to the chilling attack, the Ministry acknowledges the direness of the situation by publishing safety warnings and urging the public to come forward with information.

Voldemort's attacks on prominent Muggle locations expand, leading to public battles between his Death Eaters and the Ministry's aurors. Reflecting the growing climate of fear in the Wizarding World, The Daily Prophet begins to refer to Lord Voldemort as "You-Know-Who." The title catches on within the population at large, including among the newly graduated Marauders.

A year of escalating violence and bloodshed, Voldemort steps up his game in order to inflict havoc and uncertainty upon the British public. Bombings, town poisonings, imperiused ministry officials, and a year of murder leaves many, if not all, Britons, weary of the war and desperate for peace. A brief respite at Halloween (when many death eaters are imprisoned) is one of the only victories the Order of the Phoenix will see in this bloody battle.

s

The new year is heralded by the overthrow of the ministry by death eaters -- an act labelled by the media as an 'internal coup' and dismissed as an impetus for 'reform' and 'rebuilding.' While the aurors and hitwizards of the DMLE flee to set up camp in the highlands of Scotland, the Order of the Phoenix mourns the loss of even more allies.
