Magical Spells
canon & game canon spells

Everything in black has been taken from the Wikipedia article Spells in Harry Potter

Everything in orange is canon but not from Wiki OR it is movie/ video game canon

Everything in blue is original content (Game Canon)

All new spells must include:

• name - spell name (include jinx, hex, curse, charm)
• incantation - latin incantation
• description - the spell's effects
• notes - spell appearance, skill level, area of effect etc.
• drawbacks - limitations and difficulties
• counter - counter spell, if there is one

Nonverbal spells

Regarding nonverbal spells, the accuracy breakdown should be as follows, given that it's something difficult that requires practice and skill. The difficulty of the spell should also be taken into account when considering your percentages

Inner circle, aurors, hitwizards: 80-100% accuracy
Outer circle: 20-70% depending on age/practice
Civilians: ~30-40%
Abe, Elphias, other hella old people: 80-100%
Rest of the Order: 20%-70% depending on age/practice

A

Description: This charm summons an object to the caster, potentially over a significant distance.

(Age-Line Spell)

Description: Creates a line that is impassable by people below a set age.

Aguamenti

Description: Produces a jet of water from the witch or wizard's wand.

Alohomora

Description: Used to open and unlock doors, but doors may be bewitched so that this spell has no effect.

Anapneo

Description: Clears the target's airway, if blocked.

(Anti-Cheating Spell)

Description: Cast on parchment or quills to prevent the writer from cheating while writing answers.

(Anti-Disapparation Jinx)

Description: Used to prevent Disapparation in an area for a time. Presumably can be used to prevent an enemy from entering a defended area, or used to trap an enemy in an area.

Aparecium

Description: This spell makes invisible ink appear.

(Atmospheric Charm)

Description: Presumably causes weather patterns to be created. A malfunction of this spell may have been causing offices in the Ministry to rain.

Avada Kedavra (Killing Curse)

Description: Causes a bright green flash and a rushing noise, the curse causes instant death to the victim. There is no known counter-curse or blocking spell, although the caster can be interrupted, the victim can dodge the green jet, hide behind solid objects (which burst into flame when hit by it), or, if the casting wizard is not sufficiently competent, the curse may be completely ineffective.

Avis

Description: This charm creates a flock of birds that pour forth from the caster's wand.

B

(Bat-Bogey Hex)

Description: Grotesquely enlarges the target's bogeys, gives them wings, and sets them attacking the target.

Description: Causes the victim to become confused and befuddled.

(Conjunctivitus Curse)

Description: A curse that causes great pain to the victim's eyes.

Crucio (Cruciatus Curse)

Description: Inflicts unbearable pain on the recipient of the curse. The effects of the curse depend upon the desires and emotions of the character - to produce the "excruciating" pain implied by the name, one must (according to Bellatrix Lestrange) desire to cause pain purely for its own sake. The extreme pain inflicted by the curse when cast so - without any apparent evidence of physical harm - makes it uniquely suited as a form of torture.

Description: Creates an invisible cushioned area.

Erecto

Description: Used to erect a tent or other structure.

Evanesco (Vanishing Spell)

Description: Makes the target vanish.
Notes: According to Minerva McGonagall Vanished objects and organisms go "into non-being, which is to say, everything." It is suggested that vanished objects can be recovered.

Expecto Patronum (Patronus Charm)

Description: creates an ethereal, silvery animal (which holds some significance to the caster); this animal can be used to carry messages or to drive away dementors.
Notes: the apparition can only be conjured if the caster is able to think of a happy thought and hold onto it; cannot/will not be used by dark wizards or dark creatures; can change depending on major life circumstances; difficult for many wizards to master

Expelliarmus

(Fiendfyre)

Description: A seemingly unstoppable cursed fire, the flames of which take the shape of fantastic creatures that pursue those caught in its path. It is shown to be capable of destroying Horcruxes.
Notes: Extremely dangerous except to the most capable and experienced of dark wizards

Finite Incantatem

Description: Negates many spells or the effects of many spells.

(Flagrante Curse)

Description: Causes any object affected to burn human skin when touched.

Flagrate

Impedimenta (Impediment Jinx, Impediment Curse)

Description: This hex is capable of tripping, freezing, binding, knocking back and generally impeding the target's progress towards the caster.

Imperio (Imperius Curse)

Description: Causes the victim of the curse to obey the spoken/unspoken commands of the caster. The experience of being controlled by this curse is described as a complete, wonderful release from any sense of responsibility or worry over one's actions, at the price of one's free will. Resisting the effect of the curse is possible, however, and several individuals have been able to successfully overcome it.

Notes:
Effect on caster: feeling of warm tingling from the mind to the casting arm.
Effect on victim: feeling of indescribable contentment; every worry wiped free and only a dim awareness of surroundings.

Casting: Casting must be line-of-sight at a reasonable distance. Nonverbal or verbal, but nonverbal requires a great deal of practise and experience (inner circle & aurors only). Only the imperio is cast - the commands themselves need not be spoken aloud (DH & GOF).
Timing: Effects are long-term unless otherwise specified by the caster; the caster should 'reapply' the curse every few weeks to ensure it remains in effect, but for a very powerful caster this is not always necessary.
Lifting: A number of enchantments or charms can lift the imperius, as can the victim's realisation and struggling against it (takes a great deal of willpower and effort). A victim will not remember his actions while imperiused, nor will he be aware that he was imperiused at all, unless the caster was stupid enough to imperius him to his face.

Name - Bone Twisting Curse
Incantation - Ossisverso
Description - When the spell hits the target's body, the bone(s) in the immediate area will begin to twist in different directions. The longer the spell is held, the more they will twist, until eventually they begin to splinter and break. Obviously, it is a very painful spell.
Notes - Dark blue, thin stream of light. The spell does not twist every bone in the body at once -- it only effects the immediate area that the jet of light hits. Easy/moderate skill level.
Drawbacks - As a duration spell, the caster cannot use any other spells while concentrating on this one. As soon as the caster loses concentration, the spell is broken.
Counter - Don't get hit by it. (N/A) As always, with dark magic, it takes a little longer to heal.

Name - Throat Compression Curse
Incantation - Angor
Description - This spell gives the caster the ability to, essentially, suffocate their victim from a distance. The target would feel as if they were drowning underwater and unable to get air into their lungs (as opposed to feeling like someone were squeezing their throat to choke them).
Notes - Beam of orange light. Moderate skill level.
Drawbacks - As a duration spell, the caster cannot use any other spells while concentrating on this one. As soon as the caster loses concentration, the spell is broken and the victim can breathe again.
Counter - Don't get hit by it. (N/A)

Actually maybe this should just be a Suffocation Curse, since it's suffocation and not... compression of the throat.

Also the spell must hit the throat, otherwise it's harmless.

Name - [doesn't really have a name; Antonin made it up to make up for his lack of physical prowess]
Incantation - Saevio Verbera (saevio: to rage, ververa: blows/beating)
Description - when the spell hits, the victims feels as though they have been hit with something large, solid and forceful, radiating from the target area. Cast with the proper force, the spell can break bones and tear muscle.
Notes - bright purple fire marking the affected area; these flames are not hot or tangible. The immediate area and surrounding muscle/bone is affected. Can be cast silently by a wizard of sufficiently high expertise.
Drawbacks - Casting level is fairly high, and requires a decent amount of force of mind; someone who does not like hurting people would have great difficulty using this spell to do more than bruise, similar to the drawbacks of the Cruciatus Curse.
Counter - Shielding charms have some efficacy in weakening the effect of the spell, but not all. As with most dark magic, it takes longer to heal.

Healing spells I made up on the spot while logging, part 1

• name - Basic Stitching Charm
• incantation - Suo Derma
• description - Superficially closes open wounds on the skin, basically a temporary measure to stop massive bleeding.
• notes - Cast by moving the caster's wand over the area of skin they wish to close, appears as a sort of white light until the skin has stitched up. Moderate skill level for most people, though it's, like, the first thing Healer trainees learn after they learn about waivers and insurance
• drawbacks - This is meant to only be a temporary fix, typically something that would be done if a person had massive injuries and needed to be transported without bleeding out on the way. Any major physical activity (walking included) and the stitching will tear and be completely useless and make the Healer who did it very upset.
• counter - Patesco Derma, which really just undoes the above spell.

Healing spells I made up while logging, part 2

• name - Blood Replenishing Charm
• incantation - Repleo Cruor
• description - Multiplies the blood cells and plasma in a person's body. Blood is one of the Five Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law--it can't be conjured out of nothing (an illusion of it can, but because blood is something that is very specific from person to person, it can't simply be conjured up). It can, however, be multiplied.

When a person has lost a great deal of blood, Repleo Cruor can be cast to replenish a great deal of that blood. The caster holds his or her wand pressed against one of the patient's blood veins (the skin does not need to be penetrated) and keeps it there until s/he feels the blood has been replenished enough. The caster must maintain complete concentration and not move his or her wand or else the spell will end.

The patient experiences a feeling of warmth and, sometimes, fullness radiating from the caster's wand. Occasionally, this can feel a bit like his or her blood vessels are on fire, and many patients experience a sensation that feels like they've wet themselves once the blood reaches that level. This is simply a new excess of blood traveling through the body and is nothing to be concerned about.

When possible, actual transfusions are preferred, but this spell works when a transfusion isn't available.
• notes - If one looks carefully during the spell, there is a fine red residue around the tip of the caster's wand that disappears when the spell ends, but other than that, there are no visible signs of the spell being cast. Because of the level of concentration needed, the spell is listed as difficult, though Healers are expected to know it well before they've reached their third year of training. For them, it would be moderately difficult, but for someone who hadn't had training, it would be very difficult to duplicate.
• drawbacks - Because the spell requires such a high level of concentration, it's not a good one to use in emergency situations where there's chaos all around. For more severe bleeding, most Healers would likely prefer to use proper transfusions, solely so that they don't have to be constantly sitting and poking the patient with their wand. The spell is also the opposite of helpful when there are open wounds; the new blood just gushes right out. It's recommended, therefore, that Healers who wish to use this spell close up any open wounds before doing so. It also will not counter any poison that causes the patient to bleed profusely. It multiplies blood, nothing more.
• counter - No counter spell (though, really, why someone would want to counter their blood being replenished is beyond me). Its reverse is Minuo, which draws blood out in a similar fashion, but would only typically be used in cases of poisonous animal bites.

• Name - Muscle Killing Curse
• Incantation - Musculus Mortis
• Description - A curse that slowly kills the muscle and tissue of the area it strikes, the longer it's maintained the farther the damage spreads.
• Notes - Takes a reasonable level of skill to do, the more powerful the caster the more quickly the curse spreads. Only spreads for as long as the spell is maintained by the caster (it instantly stops spreading as soon as the caster's concentration is broken). Appears as a thin jet of white-blue light and the jet remains until the caster stops casting the spell. As one could imagine, muscle death is excruciatingly painful. It's weaker/slower if used nonverbally. The muscle/tissue affected by the curse is irreparably damaged unless it is attended to pretty much immediately.
• Drawbacks - It only works if it actually hits the victim, and unless they're already immobilized it's sort of easy to get away from (just roll out of the way, really!). It isn't an instant or quick-moving spell (more for people who desire a drawn out torture session as it's extremely, extremely painful). It spreads (killing muscle/tissue as it goes) roughly an inch per ~90 seconds for a reasonably skilled caster (an Outer Circle DE, for instance), and increases as skill goes up. Though the fastest it's ever known to spread has been an inch per ~45 seconds (old guys/Inner Circle would roughly be at that if they had practiced it).
• Counter - No counter and no fix. Just get out of the way of the light and hope you didn't need that muscle.

• Obviously, depending on the area hit by it, that part of the body would be sort of out-of-commission (a leg would be dooned to a limp, an arm wouldn't be able to heavy lift, a penis would be doomed to limpness (THANK YOU TYLA)) And I'd assume if the abdomen was the affected area, it would result in the destruction of internal organs depending on the duration, and thus causing death, but otherwise it isn't fatal so much as it's just painful. IDK I never took anatomy. The spell also doesn't penetrate/harm bone, so anything protected by bones (brain, lungs(?) or heart for instance) would be unaffected. Unless someone cracked the person open and preformed it directly on said organ/muscle/thing of importance.

It's also sort of noticeable too. Like, you can look at someone and see that the muscle/tissue has died. Unless they just amputate the thing.

• name - Black Fire Hex (lame, I know. Feel free to suggest a new name ;.; It's early!)
• incantation - Ignis Infusco
• description - Curse fire (weaker and more controlled than Fiendfyre but more powerful than Incendio. It spreads over what it hits in small, odorless, heatless black flames.
• notes - A fire spell that spreads slowly and subtly, in the form of small, controlled black flames. It spreads across whatever it's burning in radial patterns. Water won't stop it. It's easy enough to stop (Finite Incantatem) but it is still considered Dark Magic and takes a certain level of skill to repair damage caused by it. If it comes in contact with skin, it takes a great deal of skill to heal properly and will likely scar. The fire doesn't feel hot to the touch, and doesn't produce smoke, but it does burn. It's favoured for more subtle methods of Burning Shit Down, as it can pass unnoticed and by the time it becomes noticeable, it's too late for the victim/building/etc. It's a single jet of black flame, and doesn't require maintaining concentration, as once it hits something it spreads inevitably.
• drawbacks - It requires a decent grasp of the Dark Arts to use with any sort of effectiveness and even more power to control in any way. It's easy to lose control of, as it isn't as noticeable as Fiendfyre or Incendio.
• counter - Finite Incantatem</b>. Aguamenti doesn't work.

approved, with the addendum that this be considered a curse as it is dark magic

Name: Pleasure Curse
Incantation: Infinitus Gaudium
Description: When the spell hits the target, he or she experiences a wave of indescribable pleasure. It functions almost like an EXTREMELY accelerated Cheering Charm or the opposite of the Cruciatus Curse. Mind-numbing pleasure. Yes. When the spell is lifted, it will leave the target feeling euphoric for several minutes before they crash.
Notes: Blast of bright red light that fades into pink. The spell is at about the same difficulty level as the Cruciatus Curse and probably has the same potential for driving people insane.
Drawbacks: The spell only lasts as long as the caster can focus on maintaining it and no other spells can be cast during.
Counter: N/A

Accepted with the following addenda:

Drawbacks: Prolonged use can lead to anxiety and excessive use to nerve-damage. Psychological addiction and tolerance follows habitual use.
Counter: Finite incantatem

Name: the Melting Curse
Incantation: Increbresco
Description: It begins to melt skin where it hits, like wax (or like the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark), so that the skin drops off of the muscle underneath. Understandably, it causes a great deal of pain.
Notes: Comes out in fuchsia-coloured stream of light. It will do immediate damage to the skin where it hits (and can burn through clothing), but requires focus and holding the spell to make it spread further than that. Hypothetically, someone could hold the spell until all of someone's skin melts off, but it would take extreme skill and concentration and is unlikely.
Drawbacks: It's high-level Dark Magic and to hold it requires extreme concentration. If performed incorrectly, it can backfire easily, and if the caster is insufficiently skilled, it will only cause mild burns.
Counter: None, though you would do well to break the caster's concentration.

Accepted with the clarification that once the spell's magic flow is broken, no further damage occurs.

Name - Blood Draining Curse
Incantation - Cruor Lacrimo
Description - Causes the victim's blood to begin leaking copiously from their pores, concentrated mostly around the soles of the feet, palms, hairline, underneath the eyes, and neck.
Notes - Appears as a wavy, thick beam of black light. The skill level of the caster is relevant to the damage level of this curse. The higher skilled the wizard, the more the victim will bleed -- it is possible, although extremely difficult, to even cause the victim to bleed out from every pore on their body.
Drawbacks - As a duration spell, the caster cannot use any other spells while concentrating on this one. As soon as the caster loses concentration, the spell is broken, although it may take several seconds up to minutes for the victim to stop bleeding.
Counter - Can be blocked or weakened by a shield charm (based on the skill level of both casters).

Accepted with the addendum that high level casters can stem bleeding with finite incantatem, which breaks the flow of magic.
