Media Background

Media Background

This page is designed to give you an idea of what we expect from characters who are involved in the media, as well as provide information that should be useful to you as a reporter.

Posting expectations. All media characters are expected to make 2 posts a month to the blurred_media community in addition to their regular updates. These will either be articles (for written media) or transcripts (for wireless). The media is intended to be a strong force during the war, communicating information that the public needs and has no other access to, as well as shaping the public opinion. Most articles/transcripts should be war-oriented. It is always a good idea to communicate with other members of your media 'team' so that you can divide up information in a way that is useful to other characters and players.

Actions have consequences. If your character wants to make incendiary newspaper articles, it probably isn't a good idea for him or her to work in a highly public newspaper like the Daily Prophet. Members of the media must take care to bear in mind the consequences of their published material, because death eaters and the ministry will be in contact if they decide they don't like what your character is saying.

CURRENT MEDIA SOURCES

These are the media sources that exist at the game outset; if you would like your character to belong to a media organization that is not one of these (say, for example, an underground Order radio show, or a DE propagandist paper) please submit a blurb along with your application so that we can add it.

The Daily Prophet (print)

The Daily Prophet is Britain and Ireland's largest Wizarding newspaper, boasting a heritage of over a hundred years and the longest lifespans of any wizarding journalists known to date. Unlike many of its rival newspapers, the Prophet publishes news as it occurs, with the help of charmed papers that can update throughout the day. This advantage has kept them on the forefront of history and boosted them to the position of top subscribed paper in Western Europe. Topics range from gardening to career advice to local events, but rest assured that the headline news will be news, indeed.
Printing/owling dates: Every morning; important news often warrants an Evening Edition.

The Quibbler (print)

The Quibbler - hot off Xenophilius Lovegood's backyard presses and never afraid to tell the truth - is another popular magazine throughout the British wizarding world. No one is quite sure if this popularity stems from Xenophilius's occasional daring articles about the war or from the ... shall we say... 'unconventional' articles that typically grace its pages. The Quibbler is the magazine for conspiracy theorists and rebels alike.
Printing/owling dates: sporadic - usually several a week

The Wizarding Wireless Network (radio)

The WWN comprises a host of radio shows and musical stations devoted to keeping the wizarding world entertained (and occasionally informed). Though it typically caters to the middle-aged housewives with such gems as "Toots, Shoots, 'n Roots," soap operas of dubious taste, and the warbling of Celestina Warbeck, it has also been known to host the occasional newscast or important interview.

Witch Weekly (print)

Host to all sorts of important updates about the newest fashion and most useful cooking spells, Witch Weekly is also home to the wizarding world's most famous (and most scandalous) gossip column. It occasionally has the benefit of being more accurate than its more traditional peers, if only because none of the authors writes under his or her real names.
Printing/owling dates: Every week, beginning with the 3rd of January.
