These rules are not meant to hamper game play, but improve it. Rules regarding in-character behavior will be brief here because our expectations are outlined on the individual DE, ministry, order, and media pages (though some ideas are reiterated if relevant to all characters).
player conduct
Don't be an asshole. Harrassment of any kind, abusiveness, and general douchery will be rewarded with a swift kick in the ass out of the game.
Do not godmode; this means several things to us: you do not assume your blows or spells land, you don't think or act for another character, and you do not make your character annoyingly invincible.
IC stays IC and OOC stays OOC. If you refuse to play with another player because of OOC issues, don't apply. You don't need to love each other, but you do need to be a part of the game and its plot.
Spelling and grammar mistakes happen. Don't be a jerk and feel the need to point them out IN CHARACTER to a person. It's the epitome of rude.
character conduct
Actions have consequences. Your character cannot do whatever he or she damn well pleases without consequences. If you, the player, will not accept the consequences of your characters' actions, you need to rethink your place in this game.
Your character needs to act the way he or she is supposed to. We expect DEs to act like DEs and order members to act like order members. That doesn't mean your DE can't like cuddly bunnies and your order member can't be an asshole - but if your order member is going on serial killing sprees and your DE is participating in muggle rights parades, we have problems.
Your character should not seriously deviate from what you have represented on your application (we aren't talking about natural character evolution, but major personality or belief changes from the get-go). If this happens, we will ask you to change your character, reapply, or withdraw from the game.
If you are playing a pureblood or a fullblood, please remember that such families often have very little understanding of muggle culture and objects; your character should not be intimately acquainted with television or own a hula hoop
activity
All players are expected to update once every two weeks per character, either with multi-paragraph journal entries or with logs. This is the absolute minimum. We also expect you to be active in journal commenting (at least among your own faction).
Main characters (currently defined as: Bellatrix, Regulus, Lucius, Severus, Edgar, Barty Sr, Rufus, Millicent, Sirius, Remus, James, Lily, Moody, Frank, Alice) are required to have an extra log per two weeks in addition to their base requirement.
Non-wizard dark army characters (werewolves, hags, vampires) are required to have only one log per month.
Media characters have extra posting requirements detailed in the media post.
Every month there will be an activity post. You must link to your current activity. This will be your way of telling us you wish to remain at the game. Any members who don't complete this requirement will be removed without notice unless they are on hiatus. If people start posting right before activity checks and not during the rest of the month, we will start doing checks twice a month. You don't want that, seriously.
Example
"Hey guys, I'm still here!"
Rufus ( journal post 1 and journal post 2)
Xenophilius ( thread 1 and thread 2)
Rodolphus ( journal post 1 and thread 1)
hiatuses
When you are going on hiatus, please post your hiatus on the hiatus post.
If your hiatus is going to be longer than a month and you are playing a major character, we ask that you withdraw that character from the game so that major progress is not interrupted.
Any hiatus lasting longer than six weeks warrants removal from the game. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis.
journals
Journals are a communication device created by and for the ministry. Copies were leaked and bootlegs made - so now most people who want to keep up on the war efforts and stay in close, relatively safe communication are in possession of one. More information on the journals (including vital information for ministry employees) can be found in the game canon section (see link below).
For the sake of simplicity, names appear next to all entries and comments. However, anyone with a wand can charm their comment to appear anonymous (this must be noted in the subject line).
Comment and entry icons are not visible in game.
Entries and comments can be warded by their creator if he or she has a wand. Wards must be specific. You can ward to "death eaters" or to "the order" if your character knows the members but not to "loyal death eaters" or "ugly order members." Likewise you cannot ward to "friends." If you want to be more specific than factions (or houses) you must say so. Example ('Warded to all DEs except Bellatrix') or ('Warded to the Auror Department, including secretaries') or ('Warded to Sirius, Lily, and James')
Because the magic is performed on a book to which other people do not have access , wards are unbreakable unless badly charmed.
All strikethroughs are unreadable unless noted otherwise.
Roleplay can be either in the form of threads or IM logs - we have no preference. Please put all posts behind an lj-cut and label them with (something like) the following
Who
Where
When
Summary
Rating
Put the actual date! Not 'today sometime' or 'this afternoon.' This helps us when we put together the timeline
Don't leave the rating as TBD - as soon as your thread hits R or NC-17, there needs to be a warning. NC-17 posts should be locked.
The majority of your posts should not be about shipping or sex. This is a game about a war, not horny leporidae.
ANYTHING squickworthy should have an additional warning. This includes, but is not limited to: explicitly detailed violence, pictures of dismembered body parts, cannibalism.
We have three bans ('hard limits') on what can be posted: no rape, no detailed violence toward children, toddlers, babies, or animals and no paedophilia. You will only get one warning.
character limits
Players can have up to 5 characters - each from a different column (DE/purist; ministry; order/supporters; media; dark army; guerilla army). Unfortunately, if your character overlaps columns, it will limit how many characters you can have. For example, if you are playing Edgar Bones, you cannot play a different ministry or order character.
You may pick up 1 character to start. After 2 weeks you may pick up a second character if you are active and contributing to plot. After another 2 weeks, you may pick up a third (same stipulations). After another 4 weeks, you may pick up a fourth and after another 6 weeks, you may pick up a fifth. We will only be allowing 4 & 5 characters to people who prove they can be very active and involved in the game.
We reserve the right to deny any hold or application based on your current activity levels. If you are rping only the bare minimum, we'd prefer you to keep a small number of characters.
faq
What's the date and the time?
Game time is real time, 1979. The specific time is less important, but during critical events, game time is mod time [Pacific Time, GMT -8 (PST) or GMT -7 (PDT)]
So this is AU right? Yes, the plot began moving away from canon in February 1979 and has moved steadily away since. No canon events are given except for canon deaths (which do not need to occur when/how the original deaths occurred). Your character can die even if he/she is alive in canon. More details are at the game premise
So can my character be GOD?
We'd prefer a slightly more realistic variety of people. NEWTs, skills, abilities, and general accomplishments shouldn't be outlandish. If your character has 12 NEWTs and was head boy, quidditch champ, and Mr. Popular, we will probably ask you to tone it down. There are a few Hermiones and Percys out there - but most people fall in the middle of the spectrum. No one ever died from a P on their OWLs.
On a related note, wands. We don't ask for wand descriptions because you shouldn't be detailing the intricacies of your character's wand during RP, but just in case it comes up - it is a pet peeve of your mods when wands are over 11 inches (unless your character is very large or very powerful). A few examples - Voldemort's wand is 13.5", Bellatrix's wand is 12.75", James's is 11", Lily's is 10.25", and Hagrid's is 16". Cores should also not be ridiculous. If Lucius Malfoy, pompous bastard extraordinaire can have boring old dragon heartstring... so can you.
How do purists get around the 'no muggle stuff' rule?
Since we have no wizard database to work from, purists will be given some leeway in culture references.
Any reference to a cultural piece (music, art, literature) prior to ~1850 is considered acceptable for purebloods. Classical music has more leeway, literature has less leeway. We are attempting to allow purist characters some flexibility when referencing art in their journals or homes while maintaining the air of separation from muggle modern culture.
What does this mean to the non-purist player? You should refrain from criticizing purist characters for listening to Vivaldi, having a Caravaggio on their wall, or quoting Plato.
Um, so and so's ship is lame. Sorry. We are not in the business of telling people who they can and cannot ship so long as it is not blatantly out of character. If you don't want to read it, skip over that thread. Hopefully there are other things about the game you can find worthwhile.
Homosexuality y/n? We will accept homosexual and bisexual characters, but we have a cap at 10% of the character population (including NPCs). Remember that this is the 70s; if your character is gay, they certainly won't be 'out' about it. The mods will exercise their best judgement in determining which characters can be plausibly homosexual.
You guys are sucky mods.
Sorry again, but our word is final. We're very open to suggestions, but if we say something is/isn't appropriate for the game, you can either accept it or apply elsewhere. We will do our best to make this an enjoyable place for everyone, but we can't cater to every whim.
